The small island of Reunion has gotten the eyes of the world on them as debris from the missing flight MH370 was washed ashore.
But there is more going on in Reunion island. They are going to build a coastal highway outside of the coast!
Yes it´s a thrilling time for people who like amazing constructions!
The New Coastal Highway will be about 13km long. The Highlight is a 5400m viaduct along the coast cliff – a bridge over the water surface. It will carry 2×3 traffic lanes. Two of them will be reserved for Buses, pedestrians and bicycles.
The viaduct is needed because the existing cliff road suffers from rock-falls and floodings caused from tropical storms.
The viaduct will be mainly (95%) built using prefabricated elements, most of them brought in by sea. The causeway, for its part, has been designed to withstand maritime constraints and, in particular, any hundred-year waves. The coastal highway in place right now is closed up to 40 times per year dues to weather conditions.
The viaduct works (€715 million) and those on the other two works packages (€530 million) will be completed in 2018.
As the price suggests, this is no ordinary road. There will be three lanes in each direction and it will be built to withstand 90mph (about 40 m/s) hurricane winds and waves of up to ten metres.
The motorway will link capital Saint-Denis to Réunion’s port and will be built on columns rising out of the ocean.
The project started in 2013 and will be finished in 2018.
WAOW!
